Guiding Images From Concept to the Screen: Presented with Women In Cinematography

During the 2024 Camerimage International Film Festival, Panavision collaborated with the Women In Cinematography collective to present the panel conversation “Guiding Images From Concept to the Screen.” Moderated by British Cinematographer editor-in-chief Zoe Mutter, the panel featured cinematographers Nancy Schreiber ASC, whose credits include the series P-Valley and the Ondi Timoner-directed feature Mapplethorpe; Rachel Clark BSC, whose feature Edge of Summer played in Camerimage’s Cinematographers’ Debuts Competition; Zuzanna Kernbach PSC, who recently teamed with director Bartek Bala for the Polish feature Rój; Fernanda Tanaka ABC, whose As Órfãs da Rainha also appeared in the Cinematographers’ Debuts Competition; Simona Susnea, known for her work on the series Heartstopper and director Leo Leigh’s feature Sweet Sue; and Kate Reid, BSC, whose recent credits include the series Invitation to a Bonfire.
With a focus on preproduction, the panelists shared their processes for building a unified vision with a project’s director, from looking at visual references and creating mood boards to scouting locations and testing lenses. Over the course of the conversation, the cinematographers also shared and discussed footage from select credits, taking the audience behind the scenes of projects spanning a diverse range of genres, budgets and styles.
